Introduced Camping Trailers in India – First in India

Our Camp offers special care and facilities for single women/ girls. We have introduced ‘camping trailers’ in India. The advantage is that small family can enjoy Corona safe holidays with ‘physical distancing’ (social distancing) and be independent within the camp.

Corona (COVID-19) has hit the humanity like a bolt from the blue and left lots of devastation behind, an unprecedented and unpleasant event on the planet earth. The lucky ones who survived are finding new ways to move ahead. The humanity has never been hit globally ever this badly.

Corona Pandemic has changed the style of living for humans and the ways for most businesses are conducted globally, some disappeared forever and new mushroomed. Tourism industry got hit and twisted badly in an unprecedented way and many disappeared into thin air. But those who survived the first wave of the Corona, most establishments in tourism industry started wriggling out of it. Green Dot Expeditions has been no exception and remained out of business for 2 years – why? Inspite of having the biggest Recreational Vehicle to provide holidays as a unique concept of “mobile camping” we could not operate all this while. First, it is not economically viable to operate with a group which is less than 8, then we still had apprehensions that it will be risky when there are 8 people as a mixed group onboard one single RV. After lots of planning and serious discussions to ensure we don’t put anyone at risk and lose money (which became scarce during this period). We spent extra hours to ensure that we don’t take wrong steps and lose it completely and the money which was dried to the extreme by the Corona Pandemic.

The survival instincts made us scratch our heads harder like never before and think to device new ways to survive and rescue the project around Taurus, for which we have sacrificed so much. With hundreds of sessions of planning and careful scrutiny of every aspect of the new face of tourism in India, we have got new additions to infrastructure are in place today. Now, we have commissioned two trailers to do research and assessment of the market and then scale up the concept while considering the Indian market which is quite tricky. One of these is ‘Tear Drop Trailer’, named as ‘Praying Mantis’. It can host 2 persons with all the basic comforts i.e. storage, sleeping arrangements, kitchenette, etc. It’s a fully evolved concept in the West but Indians are waking up for such things only after Corona made it difficult to go on holidays and caravaning went skywards like a rocket all over the world. But in India it’s still at a nascent stage and it’s very expensive to build a caravan and tough equation of ROI (return on investment). People in India are still not able to appreciate the concept of caravaning and its benefits, it will need time to grow in India. Those who can sustain with inhouse resources will survive but those who want to make it the only business activity may be taking risk of shutting it soon because of poor ROI. So, be careful if its a business plan and that too your first business activity. Our advice is don’t just jump into it for business unless you have money to sustain for longer period. Yes you can spend any amount if a caravan is being built for self only.

You must take advice from those who have experience in this field and any consultation paid will be worth every penny, as this will save your money by saving wastage and wrong decisions when designing and fabrication starts. Though it needs courage and vision to pay consultation fee upfront for caravan in India.

Caravaning is Quite Enticing… exciting glamorous … but NOT for everyone …

India’s best Overland Truck – well equipped recreational vehicle (RV) with features of campervan, caravan and motorhome to explore rural Rajasthan in the area of Jaisalmer.

Caravaning has been one of the main activities for the outdoor enthusiasts in the West, but with Corona Pandemic it has suddenly become favourite of everyone globally and the caravan fabrication/ building has never seen such a surge in demand. What we could not do to popularise in India for 20 years, Corona has done it in 20 days! Now, we feel very happy that even a common Indian has become aware of the existence of caravans! Though it has a long way to go to become a commercially viable activity in India to make a suitable place in the Indian tourism industry as yet.

No doubt it’s the best way to be safe on holidays while Corona Pandemic is around as of now. It looks and sounds very glamorous but it has its own pros and cons, just like every rose has few thorns too, and thus it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. It’s for those who want to be on a quiet holiday away from the city lights and shopping malls, and one can manage to freshen up with sponging or stay without bath for few days! It’s a great fun for those who can use the bush in the morning if need be, not looking for a heated toilet seat fitted with a jet!

It is still a far cry for Indians to afford to own a caravan – lack of space, resources and knack to handle the technical issues, not yet cut for outdoors.

And the biggest challenge commercial caravans, which are just a few in India, are facing is how to monetize. The main misconception is about the tariff of caravan holidays, most Indians being naïve about the campervan holidays think that it should be much cheaper than a hotel room. Why? They compare a caravan built on a Temp0 Traveller with any other Tempo Traveller, not realising that to convert a basic vehicle it has taken few times more money than the basic cost of the vehicle. The bitter truth is that it’s way more expensive, as it needs quiet a bit of investment to convert a basic vehicle into a caravan and then to mobilise the infrastructure and maintain in top condition.

Please don’t mind my straight and blunt statemen that Indians as a majority are one of the most confused people about holidays and in general for everything. Caravan has almost all basic creature comforts but still its an outdoor life though with a soft touch of adventure. We Indians love others pampering us on holidays – we want someone to make our bed, cook and wash dishes. And most Indian holidays are a mix of everything – adventure, shopping, exploratory, historical, outdoor, comfort, adventure, spiritual, all in one, etc. And at the end of it it’s not a well enjoyed holiday, rather all grumble about it as fatigue filled holidays and wish to be off from the office for few more days on arrival back home. And we love reading the blogs and follow them blindly as authority on travel and holidays; we unfold our holidays as per the advice of friends, try to please them by doing it as advised. Our holiday ends up not being what we envisage or plan, none knows you better than yourself.

Caravans are suitable for long holidays and good if it’s self driven, sadly everyone can’t drive vehicles bigger than normal cars in India, and caravans are tricky for most Indians too risky to handle. If a shorter holiday has to be enjoyed with caravan then make sure it’s circuit is smaller, otherwise one will waste most of the time on roads reaching destinations in the evening and being lost for parking in the darkness of night and use it only to sleep, end up crashing like a stone in bed. Caravans are NOT just for sleeping or driving as a transport for sightseeing, these are to enjoy locations with HOME AWAY HOME concept.

Next biggest con is the shortage of space, everything smaller and cramped! Most Indians need hot shower everyday without any need of it, our sincere advice for such people is either stay home or hire a cab and stay in hotels. If you can sponge yourself to freshen up and stay without bath for few days then you should think of caravaning. And caravan is not meant for hot weather locations.

Ideally, one should be able to handle basic technical issues of the vehicle. And the caravan should be in top conditions always and it needs preventive maintenance as priority. I always say that caravaning is like riding to ride a horse for one hour you have to invest four hours under the horse for its maintenance.

We at Green Dot Expeditions offer stay in the lap of nature to relax and unwind to rejuvenate where either its a waterbody (lake or river) or beautiful view of mountains or greens or wilderness like The Thar or secluded place like Kutch! The caravan makes you enjoy such places with basic comforts and one must spend maximum time at such places instead of travelling distances and reducing caravan only as a mode of transport and use it for the night.

If you still think you can manage a caravan then go on two three holidays on hired caravan and then decide, must take time to settle with the idea of owning a caravan. The biggest hurdle then comes who will design and build it for you, as caravans are not yet readily available at automobile showrooms.

Caravan/ overlanding vehicle/ RV is part of the dreams of millions of men who love outdoors, its a ‘toy for big boys’. Are you also dreaming TO OWN A CARAVAN? Holidays with recreational vehicle (RV) are in embryonic state as of now; never heard of caravans in India till a few days before the arrival of Corona. We at Green Dot Expeditions think that there have been quite a few reasons for RV tourism not getting known in India in the past. First of all, no caravan travellers were visible in India and if some were there but their visibility was very limited in comparison to today in times of portable internet in every hand, thus people were not aware about the concept. Also, most couldn’t afford as it needed quite an effort to fabricate one and turned out to be an expensive exercise, so it was considered an activity of the rich for luxury travel. The motor vehicle acts were not clear (even now there are ambiguities), and no experienced caravan travellers to design and fabricate in India. Since there was no demand for the accessories/ fittings and equipment needed for caravan, hence were not available in India. And caravans lived only in the West till Corona brought it to India!

Now, social media and the need for a safer substitute to hotel stay on holidays have made people think for caravan holidays as it ensures ‘social distancing’ to stay untouched and safe from Corona.

These days, News travels faster than light across the globe and people got to know about how in the West people who had their own caravans escaped from cities to countryside and were safer catching fish and roasting in their grills to eat with boiled potatoes. Absolutely perfect social distancing – in absence pf medical cure for Corona, recreational vehicles (RVs) caravans are the best way to stay away from the deadly clutches of COVID-19 on holidays as you are at home even while being away from home, have full control over your environment. Caravan holidays will remain as the best option till some miracle happens in the medical field.

Now, Corona and social media are going to put caravan holidays/ recreational vehicle vacations on a booster and make them popular faster than anticipated. And the tourism industry in India is waking up to the vast potential of this segment, as its bound to grow at very high speed and at a large scale.

As expected, when the concept is in cradle right now in India, most people have confusion about vanity van being called as caravans. In India vanity vans have been more well known in the Bollywood, as these are used for the film actors for the outdoor shoots to take short breaks. Though vanity vans look very much like caravans and are plush when one takes a quick look, but have basic facilities to have a short break only – wash room with fancy toilet seat, aircon, leather upholstery, fancy lights, carpet, music system, microwave, etc. In a vanity van its occupants spend short duration and need only basic comforts, they get external support for food, electricity, water, etc. Whereas a caravan has to support living for its occupants for few days to months, it has to be ‘home away from home’ on holidays.

And if one wishes to enjoy holiday/ travel in a caravan independently for more than a week or so, then one must be well versed with the machine and ready to go under the vehicle anytime! And there are some nuances which every enthusiast must understand about caravans.

Wish to have a caravan of your own then you must know the following:

Should you own a caravan in India or hire one for holidays?

Best bet would be go on a curated caravan holiday offered by experienced service providers and have a pleasant and hassle free holiday.
1. 1. There is an old saying – easy to buy an elephant, not easy to maintain one!
  2. Owning a caravan/ overlanding vehicle in India sounds quite glamorous but if you are not an outdoor person with a technical flavor then better is to go on curated caravan holiday with a service provider like Green Dot Expeditions.
  3. Caravan in India should be for the Indian conditions and for India.
  4. If you are going to commission RV holidays as an effort to save money, then take advice and finalise the design and assess the size of the hole it will drill in your pocket, then you must work on ROI (return on investment) with a big magnifying glass in your hand – to know and understand if it is worth it? Before you take the plunge you must understand it with a cool mind. Don’t look for valid excuses to justify your intense desire to own one, usually all men do that when they want to own their ‘toys for big boys’.
  5. Driving your caravan from home to destinations will cost you far more than your car i.e. tolls, fuel consumption, wear & tear, running per kilometre. All this will add to the total cost of your holiday and make an invisible bill quite tall. It will be too late!
  6. How about the hassles of the police and RTOs on the way when you drive a big vehicle?
  7. How about depreciation?
  8. How about the age limit (10 to 15 years) of your caravan/ vehicle?
  9. You need to have quite an experience of driving a big vehicle and a driving license for a bigger vehicle than cars.
  10. Very expensive to maintain big size vehicles i.e. tyres are expensive, routine service, etc.
  11. Do you have a parking of your own in your city?
  12. How many days in a year are you going to have caravan holidays? If you work in a corporate then 15 days max in a year, if stretched. If you have your own business then hardly a week ten days. Instead of having your own caravan, better it is to hire one.
  13. Are you a bit of technical hand to carry out small repairs yourself on the road on your vacation?
  14. Having your own caravan sounds a great idea, but remember – on your short holiday you will have to manage water refill, toilet offload, replenish veggies, where to spend the night and keep looking for parking everyday. It’s a good idea to have your own caravan if you are going on a longer trip, otherwise these chores will eat away precious time of your holidays.
  15. India doesn’t have caravan parks like they have in the West. And most Indians are thinking they will travel in their caravan and use a hotel parking or a resort.
  16. Would you like to barter your privacy? There will be drivers of other vehicles and trying to peep into your vehicle, a common habit of taxi drivers in India. Our two friends who owned their own caravans have experienced the same.
  17. Onlookers will gather around your vehicle in such parkings for sure – making noise and causing disturbance and some will not hesitate even knocking at your vehicle and asking “Sir, may I see your vehicle from inside”.
  18. Would you like to have unwanted noise and lights of other taxis and vehicles driving into the parking lot?
  19. Parking of a hotel and resort or even in a camp is NOT at all a good idea – its an insult to the concept of caravan.
  20. With such a big investment to own a caravan, and parking it in a hotel parking or resort (as many are contemplating),its better to drive in your car and stay comfortably in a hotel with all those creature comforts.
  21. Remember, if you own a caravan then your travel radius will be reduced, as you will be compelled to travel within 1000 kms or so, only few may cross that “Laksham Rekha” (self created red line). You will not go out and explore destinations which you could do if you had no chains attached to your own caravan.

  24. If you still wish to own a caravan then you must consult a professional (who has travelled in a carav) to even understand the basic concept and design of a caravan. You will certainly save quite a bit of money, otherwise you will burn your fingers and learn what we have already learnt; you will have to alter your caravan a few times after each trip and waste time and money. The professionals like our team who have travelled in self-designed caravans have burnt their fingers many times, you pay for that and save your own and get a mature design.
  25. Best is hire a caravan and enjoy your vacation.
  REMEMBER: Only a designer with long experience of caravaning can advise you for the design of your caravan.
  
  Following are the glimpses of the complexities where a seasoned caravan designer who has designed/ fabricated and travelled, burnt his fingers many times, did extensive research in the last 22 years or so (20 years of usage).
- Water storage issue needs ultimate attention and it sounds very easy but very complex to have foolproof reliable system. Our team has gone through it many times.
- Water Pump has to be selected as per the needs and the size of your caravan and then the budget.
- Water filter: must have potable water which is 100% safe. We have used many filters and tested and junked before we finalised what are the best choices.
- Toilet: its not that easy as in the houses, buy a WC and connect with cistern and pipe to flow out black water. There are many solutions: basic to advance, top brands to basic. Never ever compromise on this – if you design poorly or install wrong components and it starts emitting foul smell in side the caravan, you can image! We have the best solutions!
- Sleeping: Its can’t be designed like a bedroom but you still need enough space to be comfortable for a good sleep.
- Aircon: many think pick up a domestic split A/c and connect with a genset

After experiencing something unprecedented Corona Lockdown, most people are desperate to step out of houses and summer travel season is here. But Corona can be handled only by ‘social distancing’ and serious high quality of hygiene, only passionate team can provide.

Even if you want to travel, as of now it’s almost next to impossible. Most countries have closed their borders for nonessential travel completely. India’s 1.3 billion people are under one of the strictest lockdowns in the world. As of now in India, travelling even across towns without an emergency or those who are not on essential service, is strictly prohibited.

But now Indian government has given some relaxation as it seems we have achieved quite a bit of control over Corona COVID-19. The aim of the government’s lockdown exercise is to kill or exhaust the virus with ‘social distancing’ and people are not used to to living life with such restrictions staying indoors. 2. Drive your own cars to travel on your holidays.
3. One should be self reliant for the beverages and food for the journey to avoid any touch with people.
4. By Protecting Others We Protect Ourselves. Whether it’s protecting your own family, your neighborhood, city, country, or continent, we have an obligation to minimize the spread of COVID-19.
5. Be rest assured, we will do our best, we never compromised even during these last 5 years. Now, we will be extra careful.
6. Some of the most suitable safe choices would be homestays in the hills, boutique properties, standalone properties in the mountains, yacht, rice boats in Kerala, caravans/ RVs, etc.
