What to Pack – List

How to Prepare for Holidays in Ladakh and Spiti Valley

Ladakh and Spiti Valley enchant everyone and now with the social media these two have become most sought after “hottest” destinations to travel in India. There are some serious challenges to travel to these rugged regions but can be managed easily with some basic preparations.

Temperatures in Ladakh and Spiti Valley range from -3 to 30 degrees Celsius in the summer and from -35 to -60 degrees Celsius in the winter. The weather in these regions can get cold pretty quickly, as soon as the sun sets behind the mountains and it gets extra cold suddenly due to wind chill effect and temperatures can change rapidly. One needs warm clothing for even in summers in these areas.

Any situation in mountains can change suddenly and things can turn very dramatic in a moment in the mountains, especially weather conditions.

LIST OF ITEMS SUGGESTED FOR LADAKH
&
Important Points to Note

We have tried our best to make a comprehensive list for what to carry and precautions to be taken by the travellers in these regions, but with your own experience and needs, you may add and remove items.

REMEMBER:  Best is to be prepared than be sorry!

Taurus being a mobile camping having space for your basic comforts, can’t afford to provide you laundry facilities.

Please Note: As our guests of Taurus, please don’t carry hard suitcase as we have no space to stow away these after emptying your baggage in to lockers which we provide to our guests. Instead, please carry collapsible duffle bags. Carry only bare minimum stuff and only those which are a must.

MUST refer to the list of restricted items by your airline. Sometimes, different airlines have different lists.

CLOTHING: There won’t be any laundry available at our camp, please bring your clothing accordingly. But at the same time, you won’t need to wear fresh clothes everyday, therefore its suggested not to carry over-packed bags with extra clothing which you won’t need.

  1. A jacket you usually will wear during winters in the plains and one like that of fleece.
  2. A wind cheater.
  3. The best way to handle this tricky weather is carry ‘layers of clothing’, so you can remove and wear as per the temperature. Keep a jacket handy.

  2. Dark glasses with UV protection.

INTERNET & CELL-PHONE NETWORK

  1. Ladakh: Best is to find out the latest services available just few days before your travel. Only Post-Paid numbers work in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
  2. The BSNL, Idea, Jio, Airtel, Vodafone provide cell-phone services and internet; calls work reasonably good but internet is not that great.
  3. Internet used to be very scanty in Spiti and it demanded immense struggle to open even one simple WhatsApp message. But the situation is supposed to have improved with Jio internet in 2020.

WHILE ON THE TRIP

  1. If you arrive at Leh by air then you must follow the medical advice sincerely-  you must take complete rest for 24 hours for very basic and essential acclimatization.
  2. If you are following the basics then your trip can be hassle free. But over-bravado and casual attitude towards the “high altitude sickness” can be very troublesome and sometimes fatal.
  3. Don’t drink alcohol, it can be fatal.
  4. Don’t starve yourself.
  5. Keep yourself hydrated with warm drinking water.
  6. Take deep breath after every few minutes.
