ITINERARY IN DETAIL
Arrive at Pushkar
Amidst lots of excitement to witness one of the age old traditions of bygone era, we reach Pushkar. Pushkar Cattle Fair is the world’s largest camel fair held in the holy town of Pushkar and has, over the years, become more of a pilgrimage for photographers from all over the country and the world. Witnessing the fair, you will feel teleported in time to centuries ago!
TAURUS would be anchored on the outskirts of the town, we serve a home-cooked, healthy lunch on board Taurus. After lunch, you are at your own disposal. You may visit the fair to familiarize (reccee) yourself or you may stay back to relax and unwind from the journey. Just hang around TAURUS, take a short nap, anything that you wish to do. Best is to organise your camera gear! Join us for our tea ritual in the evening.
Pushkar Cattle Fair blows wits out of the first time visitors and becomes a ‘brain teaser’ for quite some time. There are colours all over and given the wide variety of business activities that happen here, it becomes the trading center of the whole area for the duration of the fair. Capt Suresh Sharma shall proudly share his experiences with you being a veteran of 12 fairs so far. Bead necklaces of Nagaur, woollen blankets of Merta, textiles of Ajmer and Jodhpur, brassware of Jodhpur and Jaipur, horse saddles, ropes and chimes embellished with colourful beads for horses and camels, and assorted household items, you name it and its selling here! Variety of cultural shows, exhibitions, competitions are organised, bards and poets recite tales of valour and heroism of the bygone era which will leave you in awe of this fair. Horse and camel races add to the attraction and colour of this fair.
Just like a soldier prepares for the next day’s battle, get ready for the action filled fun day the next morning. Charge the batteries of your equipment, empty all your memory cards, fill up your wallet for all the shopping, and be ready to conquer the fair with your lenses and eyes.
Dinner is served from the kitchen of TAURUS with great love and affection, leaving both your stomach and your senses fully satiated!
Live the Pushkar fair!
This morning is going to be a very very special one and much dreamt of and awaited, to be at the Pushkar Cattle Fair, and most shall wake up without a wakeup call. Others shall be woken by the ‘whistling kettle’ on the burners extending invitation to a steaming cup of tea/ coffee, dip a rusk or two to quieten those early morning pangs. The day of the most cherished event of your photography career is finally here; pack your things properly (a briefing shall be done by Capt Suresh himself, how to go about in this fair). Before you step out, close your eyes and rehearse your ‘battle action’, you must know which pocket has what. Buckle a bottle of water and take a hand towel. Don’t forget to grab an energy drink (juice or freshly prepared concoction) and fill your pockets with some candies and biscuits. We have these special energy packs available in our tuck shop onboard!
The battlefield like atmosphere shall ‘inoculate’ you like a soldier for action and you shall be peeling of bananas without sanitising hands for a change. This action can turn anyone into a ‘matured photographer’ overnight and shall grant you ‘UNLIMITED BRAGGING RIGHTS’ back home and for those lunch breaks at office cafeteria.
Pushkar is full of action, needs bundles of energy, time and well organised logistics. You will have the time of your life absorbing all the colours and the festive vibe of the fair. Walk around, take pictures, chit-chat with the traders, the owners, the buyers, shop for exotic stuff from all over the state and you will feel completely lost in this charming old world. It may even seem like a dream and that you are living in some earlier century. Live this experience fully and whole-heartedly because it will stay with you forever!
As the evening sets, you would still not want to leave the fair. How you would wish it would go on and on! We assure you that you would come back to TAURUS with a very heavy heart, your camera and mind full of memories
At TAURUS, we look forward to serve you with a heart-filling healthy dinner.
Night stay as always onboard Taurus on the outskirts of Pushkar.
Drive to Khichan
After our tea ritual and an early breakfast, Taurus makes way to exit through the jam-packed colourful fair. We drive to Khichan, via Nagaur, with a field lunch break, to see the largest congregation of demoiselle cranes and ornate havelis. It is approximately a five hour drive with beautiful desert scenery and some small towns in between.
As always, we anchor a little outside the village and stay the night aboard Taurus.
Depart for Khuri
After early morning tea, we walk to the largest congregation of Demoiselle cranes at Khichan, where they are fed by the villagers with one ton of grain everyday, a phenomenon which has no parallel globally. The birds make awesome subjects for shooting, of course with the camera! The havelis in the village will leave you awestruck with their intricate designs and architecture. After this lovely time-travel through the enchanting village of Khichan , we take a quick breakfast and depart for Khuri, which is 220 kms from here, 50 kms from Jaisalmer.
At Khuri, hop on a camel and ride into the crimson red sunset over the sand dunes. Come back soon, as we serve you hot dinner on TAURUS.
Let’s go home!
After a lovely morning together and a mouth-watering breakfast, its time to part ways from Taurus with a heavy heart and a dream to be back again. Loaded with memories and memory cards for enchanting story telling sessions at home and office breaks.
We shall be happy to coordinate your departure for Jaisalmer, if you wish.
