Caravan / RV tourism has spurted in India and added a new chapter in the industry which is going to create thousands of new jobs. Corona has spurred about the existence, utility and value of RVs (recreational vehicles) for safe holidays globally, as a result there is a sudden skyward trend in it’s sales. Now the Indian tourism industry has also started considering the caravan holidays as the most hygienic way to travel, social distancing assured and its your own home environment away from home. And it will certainly change the way Indians holiday – RV travel is going to add a significant new leaf to the tourism industry of India.
“Its the freedom of the outdoors, the enrichment that comes with living an active outdoor lifestyle at exotic secluded locations, and the ability to go where you want, when you want.” Also, its always a fun way to travel and connect with family, it offers the best ‘quality time’ together as family for bonding.
It may come as a surprise for most readers here that recreational vehicles (RV) have been used for long in India as well, some royal families of Rajasthan had their own RVs. And there were caravans much before the motor vehicles i.e pulled by horses, elephants, bulls, etc. With the advent of motor vehicles, some enterprising rich people made their caravans on motor vehicles in India. So far, it has remained the choice of the rich only in India and never came out of the private life of the rich and royal.
What is overlanding? In simple words, overlanding is vehicle-based, on-road and off-road, adventure travel with a focus on self-reliance, resilience, and enjoyment of the journey, not around destinations only, its creates destinations on the journey itself. Since the advent of four-wheel drive vehicles, modern overlanding has captured the fancy of eager adventurers worldwide. Basically, to enjoy ‘nomadic lifestyle’ at own will and wish.
Overland Trucks are designed with basic comforts for road trips and storage space. And its meant for more number of young people to travel, mostly 20 persons in a group. Usually, passengers have seats like a bus, cooking equipment is packed away and pulled out to cook at places of break either at fixed.
SUV Overland Trucks Now with the advent of 4×4 SUVs people have started mounting rooftop tents and a toilet tent separately on ground and SUV cars are also being called as ‘overland trucks’. Some SUVs tow a trailer fitted with rooftop tents.
Caravan, as per most people, it’s a self-propelled vehicle that provides both transport and sleeping accommodation; designed to cook, sleep, storage, washroom – all facilities and features inside, usually for 2 to 4 people. Also, it has solar panel, genset, inverter, room heater, water heater, aircon, small fridge, etc. You may be surprised that some call a towed trailer (with facilities for holidays) as a caravan.
Caravan word has derived from ages old style of travel of a group of travelers, as traders or pilgrims, journeying together for safety in passing through deserts, hostile territory, etc. any group traveling in or as if in a caravan and using a specific mode of transportation, as pack animals or motor vehicles: a caravan of trucks; a camel caravan.
Campervan is a subtle shade of caravan only, but smaller in size. But usually in this case vans are fitted with arrangements to sleep and cook and as transport. Campervans may be equipped either with a “pop-up” roof or rooftop tent which is raised during camping. Campervans usually have a small kitchen with a refrigerator (which is often powered by a choice of gas, battery, or mains electricity).
Usually, campervans lack built-in toilets and showers, or a divide between the living compartment and the cab. Often carry a “porta-potty” portable toilet, and sometimes an external shower which operates within the privacy of an awning nor open tent.
Motorhome is vehicle based larger form of a caravan with luxuries and good space and almost everything of a home for a couple or micro family, intended to be more comfortable on holidays than a campervan.
Camper or Camper Trailer is towed behind a motor vehicle to provide a place to sleep which is more comfortable and protected than a tent (although there are fold-down trailer tents). It provides the means for people to have their own comforts like a mini home on a journey or a vacation, without relying on a guesthouse or hotel, and enables them to stay in places where there are no facilities to spend a night. However, in some countries campers are restricted to designated sites for a fee.
Vanity Van concept has probably been introduced by Bollywood in India. Life on the film sets can become strenuous and main role actors need to relax during break intervals. Film stars are often known to splurge on state of the art vanity vans. Most of the personal vanity vans of Bollywood celebrities are extra cozy and swanky in every respect. Its a sort of arrangement to take short breaks in the field by the film actors and people who have field work and have to visit workplace which are open sites. The main focus is on a sofa set with table, bed, tall mirror, fancy lights, washroom, etc. Mostly no kitchen!
